Kitchen Remodel: What to Demo First

Jun 22, 20264 min read

A smooth kitchen remodel starts with the right demolition order. Here's how we tear out without tearing up the rest of the house.

Demo day is satisfying, but it's also where most DIY kitchen remodels go sideways. The order you remove things matters as much as what you install afterward.

We always start with protection. Floors, doorways and nearby rooms get covered before a single cabinet comes down. Dust containment keeps the rest of the house livable during the project.

Next comes disconnects — water, gas and electric. We verify lines are shut off and, when needed, bring in licensed trades for anything that isn't a simple shut-off.

Cabinets and countertops come out next, followed by appliances. Removing upper cabinets before lowers prevents damage and gives the crew room to work. Flooring is last unless we're also changing the subfloor or layout.

Load-bearing walls get checked before anything structural is touched. We've seen too many homeowners open up a kitchen only to find a beam that should never have been removed without support.
